Terrain: Typical modern suburban terrain. The area consists of two modern estates. LFE was built in the 1980s. The New Lubbesthorpe area is still under construction and is around quarter complete. They are quite different. They are separated by a large runnable open area and many other open areas exist elsewhere particularly in Lubbesthorpe. Courses are planned to offer route choice and traffic levels in both are surprisingly low.
Experimental Map:
The area is too large to fit on an A4 map at 1:4k scale using ISSprOM symbols.
The scale is 1:6k using some simplification to reduce clutter and drawing time.
The map takes some inspiration from the simplicity of an OpenOrienteeringMap generated from
OpenStreetMap data. However the aim is to overcome some of the problems of using this
simple approach. This also make routes and courses easier to see - but still challenging to follow.
There is no detail in out-of-bounds areas which are shown using a light grey with black
border instead of the olive shade normally used. The trafficked area of roads is shown to
scale. Most other areas are also very runnable but detail of footpaths and the edge of
paved edges is omitted for clarity. A colour of Rough Open yellow is used for these
runnable areas and all grassy areas.
Hedges, water features, larger trees and fences are shown. Dark green hedges are
typically difficult to cross and should not be crossed. Light green hedges have gaps in
them. Numerous larger fenced water features and should be treated as Out-of-bounds. There
are many minor drainage channels in some areas. These are typically dry and are shown
with the seasonable water symbol. They often end with small headwalls and some have
short fences too. A small special symbol is used for these described as spring/fence. Tree
canopy is shown white.
An example can be viewed here.
