Planner's Comments

Revised comments - the paragraph in green below is now irrelevant in relation to the splits above as Mark Foxwell kindly pointed out how to show the appropriate control numbers on the splits in AutoDownload. The comments do however still hold true for the printed splits that you received on the day. There is a minor change to the points credited to the winner of the score course but it does not affect the positions.

Recycling is very much the buzzword in these times so we decided to follow the trend and recycle the White, Yellow and Orange courses from the National Forest trophy event held at Martinshaw in 2007, on the basis that it would probably be a totally different set of people doing the courses. The Score course was new but conceived rather quickly after discovering that the printer of maps (Simon Ford) was due to go on holiday about a fortnight before the event, not returning until just before the event itself. This meant that the score course was planned rather more hurriedly than we would have preferred in order to get the maps printed.

This also led to another anomaly, namely that the control code we had used (201 - 227) turned out to be different to the actual set of SI controls that we received (221 - 250). In order to avoid reprogramming the boxes new numbers (20 less than the number programmed into the box) were taped to the boxes. We mention this in case you are having trouble reconciling the numbers you thought you had punched with the numbers appearing on your splits e.g. if you punched control 205 the number 225 will appear on your splits.

A couple of controls were also vandalised mainly affecting the white and yellow courses. Anyone on those courses with one of those contols missing has been assumed to have visited the control and an imaginary split time added. One of the two vandalised controls was on the score course but was replaced fairly early on (thank you John Duckworth for discovering the problem and replacing the control) and as far as we can see did not affect anyone on that course.

ps. I wondered why there were so many people waiting to start when I returned to registration after putting out the last lot of controls. I gather that the event details on the website gave the starts from 10.00 am whereas I had been told 11.00 a.m. so I thought that I was doing quite well to be finished by 10:20 am.
