After-School Club

Oadby & Wigston Schools Partnership

The club runs weekly from Tuesday 16th September 2008 until the end of November and is joined by application to the School. The club is open to pupils in Year 8 and Year 9 at Abington, Bushloe, Gartree, Manor and South Wigston High Schools.

  • The first four sessions will be at Bushloe High School (from the Sport centre) from 4 to 5pm.
  • The second four sessions, with a gap for half term, will be at Beauchamp College.

The programme includes four Autumn Series Saturday morning sessions: Evington Park, Abbey Park, Knighton Park, Brocks Hill Country Park see the Fixtures on this web site for further details. These events are open to all school children and adults. Younger children may be shadowed or go round in pairs. Cross-country buggies can be used at most parks on the easier courses, but note at Evington Park a lot of the routes are on grass.

The events at Abbey Park and Knighton Park are part of the Leicestershire Winter League so will be busier. All pupils completing a course will gain points for the junior section of this league.

Maps: These events are master map based so that a red pen is useful for copying your course(s) on to a blank map. Overlay sheets are provided to enable courses to be checked before starting the competition. An A4 plastic bag is needed in wet weather to keep the map safe.

You can view maps for Abbey Park and Brocks Hill by accessing the Permanent Course map on this web site.

Timing: SI Computer timing will be used. A registration slip should be handed in at each event. You can obtain a blank slip from www.leioc.org.uk/members/C4evententryform.pdf. Equipment will be provided free but dibbers cost £25 to replace so need to be firmly fixed onto a finger before leaving the start. Make sure you download and return your dibber before going home.

Coaching: will be provided by LEI coaches Darren Merriman and Chris Bosley.

Cost: The programme is provided under the Sport England's Sport Unlimited scheme, so all coaching is free. However for the Saturday morning sessions the competition fees are £1 for children and £3 for adults.

Awards: All children should maintain a British Schools Explorer Challenge Award competition log book and get each course signed off. Once the required standard is met take the log book to the club shop to register for an award, normally a badge and certificate costs £1.50, but these are free to those in the after-school club. You are entitled to two free badges under the programme. See Explorer Challenge on this web site http://www.leioc.org.uk/juniors/explorer.html

British Schools Score Event: This event is on Saturday 11th October in the Sherwood Forest. There are beginners course so anyone can go. Entries close very early and interested pupils need to be entered through their school. Please let your coach know at the first session if you are able to attend.

These events also qualify for the East Midlands Colour coded award, achievement is based on the time taken compared with the course winner. These larger events cost more as there are land access fees, car parking fees and dibber hire fees, etc.
